Title: Rhino Boxset
Post by: tron on 09/09/08 at 21:28:29
Hey All,
I'm new here and thought I'd join in the fun! Anyway...I heard about the Oxford DVD and saw the footage from the 70's, but my question is Oxford says the rest of the footage is due out on a Rhino Box Set at the end of the year. I couldn't find much more info. more info? Supposedly its all 3 albums remastered, a crapload of demos/unreleased stuff and a dvd of the entire footage. Anybody know anything about this???
Also, what's up with the Big Star movie?? I saw the trailer a year or so ago, but the link on the Wikipedia page is dead and I can't find any info....

Great info tron.
A box set would be great! I didn't read that when i bought the Oxford dvd.
Last I knew Scott Lane was working on a Big Star movie and then as of a few years ago - there was no communication from him. I assume he's dropped it now.
Then I thought someone else picked up the ball and was going to do a more straight ahead documentary on the band.
So who knows?!?
And welcome aboard!

The OxAm "Best of the South" issue mentioned a "Rhino Box Set," but didn't even specify whether it was a box set about Big Star or not. I looked all over the Rhino web site 2 weeks ago, but to no avail.
Rhino does compilation boxes, and that footage could end up on a "Power Pop Box," for all I can tell. Also, OxAm could have printed an inaccuracy-it also stated that all of that Big Star film footage was silent, when we know that at least some of it has sound because of the Jovanovic book and its transcription of some of the dialogue.
Has Rhino since updated their web side to include information on a "Big Star Box Set?"

What I know of past releases on Rhino - is that Rhino doesn't always give months in advance of upcoming releases. Sometimes it's not until the month of that Rhino will list the product.
Just my .02 observation...

It's not just Rhino who is in the dark about this alleged box set. No one seems to have any infomation on this box set anywhere, except for the OxAm reference and tron. What was tron's source?

I emailed Danielle and the others about the movie but I never heard back from them. ...this was months ago.

I see there is a review of the new box set on this site: http://talkaboutpoppopmusic.blogspot.com/
It looks groovy! ...lots of rare recordings. No mention of the films from last summer. I thought that was gonna be on there too.
I always wondered when somebody was going to release the famous Jan. '73 live show at the Lafayette Room in Memphis. This is the famous show that is discussed in the book by Jovanovic.

I'm also a tad disappointed there isn't a DVD included w/the box set. :(
I was so looking forward to seeing the footage Jovanovic talked about in his BS bio.
I'd like to say I'm looking forward to the whole box set but quite honestly - now I'm looking forward to disc 4 the most - the rest on disc 1-3 are a mixed bag of material that has circulated and some has not - obviously this should be better sonics (one would think) but as it stands I was looking forward to hearing songs that have either been rumored to exist or songs that had circulated under names that may or may not be correct.
For example: 'Another Time Another Place And You' - where is this song and is it a BS song or a Bell solo piece?
Also there was rumored to be a song called 'Knoxville' which could've been an instrumental and maybe that was the song 'Another Time Another Place And You'?
But the DVD thing - sorta irks me y'know?

Actually the Rhino site says it's a 'highlights' of 3 sets the band did.
So in other words we aren't getting the full show - just some 'best of' 3 sets. :(
I'd rather hear an entire show the way it was not someone's idea of how it should sound.
Here's the Rhino quote:
The collection's final disc contains unreleased highlights from three sets Big Star performed at Lafayette's Music Room in Memphis in January 1973. It is the best live recording ever of the band.

Another sticking point about the box set - it appears there's repeats from Ardent Records Story 2CD.
If that's the case then that's too bad - I don't see the point in that. Of course all BS fans bought ARS 2CD - and now we will buy the box set but why the repeats?
Also BS fans have already bought Rock City on Lucky Seven - why would the BS box set compilers put that material on here as well?
There has to be other alternate tracks and what-not of BS in the vaults they didn't use to take the place of the repeats.....?!?

..and here's something else to ponder...
Among the 98 tracks on the box set are the same studio released versions of tracks we already have from #1 Record, Radio City and 3rd Sister Lovers.
Why the repeats? I don't get it!?!

Turns out Knoxville is just a working title for one of the songs on Radio City. Also, the track labled 'Instrumental' on the What's Going Ahn boot isn't really Big Star. It's Joe Hardy's Out Of Gas Again. Andy plays on it though.

I think the idea is to "tell the Big Star story" through the 4 discs. I don't have a problem with that.

Nothing wrong with telling the story - I just disagree in the way it is being told in this box set.
Fans of Big Star will already have the studio cuts - so why make us buy them again in this box set?
This box set isn't for the casual music listener who happens to be strolling down the aisle in K-mart and decides he needs a $7.99 Best of Night Ranger CD.
Again - why do we as fans have to purchase the studio cuts again (#1 Record, Radio City & Third) included in this box set?
Why can't there be other unreleased or alternate takes used in their place?
Re-release the studio albums on their own with extra tracks or whatever to encourage us to re-purchase the studio cuts but it was not the best decision that I can see to include them in a $70 box set in which die-hard fans have been wishing for for years.

Regarding the Lafayette Music Room recordings...I went through them when writing my book about Radio City for the 33 1/3 series. There were a total of 36 songs performed over the two nights. Most of the songs were performed twice and I'm sure Rhino decided to take the best take when there were two performances. The songs performed only once were Don't Lie To Me, Hot Burrito #2, I Got Kinda Lost, There Was A Light, ST100/6, Try Again, Watch The Sunrise, and Come On Now (Kinks tune). There was a lot of dead space (band just tuning up, changing instruments etc.) between songs, often running longer than a minute, so it would have been pretty boring to include that all (maybe save it for a Having Fun with Big Star On Stage collection). What's really interesting in listening to the unedited performances is that is literally NO reaction to the band between songs. Maybe one person clapping. Mostly just the sound of glasses clinking and general chatter. You've all heard various people associated with Big Star that no one in Memphis really cared about them. Well, you can really (not) hear it on the tapes. (I won't be getting the box until tomorrow but will report back with my impression of how they put together the live disc.)
Regarding the documentary...having spoken with the people involved, my impression is that the lack of live footage (i.e. none) of the band is a big stumbling block. Alex told me when I interviewed him for the book that the only footage he was aware of was a sequence a local news crew shot when the original line-up played a festival near New Orleans. They were the first band on and the crew was eager to get some footage for the evening news and get out. The band was back at their hotel in time to see the clip but given the cost and effort involved in preserving tape, it's almost certainly long gone.
Any related questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. Bruce Eaton

Just checked my notes on the live disc recordings and here's the breakdown:
Three songs were performed three times: Baby Strange, Back of a Car, When My Baby's..., Way Out West
Eight songs were performed twice: 13, India, Slut, O My Soul, My Life Is Right, She's A Mover, In The Street, El Goodo
These were performed once: Don't Lie To Me, Got Kinda Lost, Hot Burrito #2, There Was a Light, ST100/6, Try Again, Watch The Sunrise, Come On Now.
So unique songs total and all are represented on the live disc. Interesting omission from the sets: Feel (especially given that Alex wrote the bridge).

Thanks Bruce for the input on the live 4th disc.
I hear what you're saying about the editing job and can understand why they are doing it the way they are.
Of course the completest in me wants to hear it all - unaffected.

Maybe someday they'll release a "Having Fun With Big Star On Stage" album in that grand Memphis tradition (see: Elvis). I'm really eager to hear the live disc. Hope it's not too "cleaned up". The original tapes have a nice "you are there" bootleg sound.

I really doubt they would release it if they haven't already.
Our only hope is bootleg circles for material like that - I have learned to never wait for official releases such as that on official labels.

I don't know how much unreleased stuff was left off the box set, but there were enough new songs (to me) and alternate takes to please me. Of course if the box set was just that, it might have only been 2 + the live set (which I enjoyed much more than the audience). I agree the compilers were trying to tell the whole Big Story city and it's a pretty good representation of the band IMHO.

I don't see the point in telling the story via previously released BS tracks as the compilers have done here.
Who are they marketing this to - BS fans or mom looking to buy a christmas present for her 35 year old son still living at home in the basement and dreaming of playing lead guitar for some imaginary band?
BS fans will buy this set regardless - we don't need a primer to remind us of who's who and what's what. We already own at least 3 or 4 different versions of #1 Record/Radio City (Line, Fantasy, Fantasy remaster, Akarma releases, HDCD Fantasy version - etc....)
The casual music fan strolling down the aisle at K-mart looking for Night Ranger's greatest hits is not going to stumble on this BS box set and say to himself 'hey - who are these guys? - I think I'll buy this and find out'.
At close to $60 - this is not an impulse buy price - this is for the fan already in the know.
Me personally - I already know it (the story) pretty well as I've been a fan since 1995 and really delved into them.
So the 'telling of the story' is neither here nor there for me in terms of including already released tracks in this box set.
My gripes are:
1) previously released studio tracks - we have these already
2) previously released alternate studios tracks - as fans we already have the 'Thank You Friends - 2CD' with these exact same tracks
3) The 45" single mix of 'In The Street' is not the same as the real vinyl version. I have the vinyl version and the mixes aren't quite the same.
Long story short - include the 'real' original mixes.
4) I think the 1st disc should've been a pre-Big Star track sequence featuring the tracks of Chris Bell's high school band 'The Jynx', some AC solo material post Box Tops, Chris Bell with Terry Manning, Rock City/Icewater outtakes etc.
5) the live disc - I'm not excited that the compilers edited/compiled the 'best performances' from the few sets BS played at the Rock Writers convention into 1 seemingly complete BS concert.
I understand that there was alot of dead space in between songs and what-not - I'm just a purist who would've liked to have the show in a more honest raw form - like giving you the idea of being there.
6) There really needed to be a DVD included in this box set.
Rob Jovanovic describes that Andy and Chris filmed alot of the #1 Record recording sessions - tho the audio is silent. A sound collage of studio chatter and alternate takes could've been created to make a new soundtrack to the silent footage.
And there is more silent video footage of the band besides the studio shots as evidenced in the 'Thank You Friends' video montage included on a DVD in 2008 in some obscure magazine no one ever buys.

Finally I bought this box...
Of course, the music is brilliant!
I really enjoy hearing the previously unreleased stuff.
Although I would have prefered either a box of totally unreleased material
or one with the complete available Big Star studio recordings.
Also, a CD with the (best of) Chris Bell pre-Big Star recordings(Icewater/Rock City etc.) would have been nice!

The Rock City CD has already been released so no need to duplicate it here in the box set.
